The Loss of King Von

King Von stood out in an age when rap music had become increasingly formulaic with his unique storytelling and bravado that set him apart from his peers.

Lil Durk took notice of O’Block’s 2018 mixtape “Crazy Story,” and signed him to his Only The Family label. Welcome to O’Block was officially released as his debut studio album later in 2020.

1. King Von is a great performer

King Von was an incredible performer who always managed to keep his fans interested and engaged with him. His engaging storytelling made it feel as if you were there alongside him, and his high-energy performance could keep his fans coming back for more!

King Von, better known by his stage name Dayvon Daquan Bennett of Chicago was signed to Lil Durk’s Only The Family label and often referenced his membership with the Black Disciples gang in his music.

Grandson Vol. 1 and Levon James were released as his debut mixtapes respectively in 2019 and 2020, and showcased his talent of rapping over harsh Drill beats with an individualistic style that set them apart from others in their genre.

2. He is a member of the Black Disciples gang

King Von’s death is an immense loss for hip-hop. A talented artist and rising star, his music demonstrated his ability to tell captivating tales that were both entertaining and moving, showing no fear when taking risks and inspiring many people with his music to live life freely and chase their dreams.

Dayvon Daquan Bennett, more commonly known by his stage name King Von, made waves in Chicago’s drill scene when Lil Durk noticed his fluid storytelling style and signed him to his Only The Family label; soon thereafter his viral 2018 single “Crazy Story” went viral and quickly became a hit single.

Once Von had found success in his hometown, he relocated to Atlanta where he continued his rise through the drill scene. His debut mixtape Welcome to O’Block was released in 2019 followed by Levon James with guest performances by artists such as YNW Melly and NLE Choppa.

3. He is signed to Lil Durk’s Only The Family label

King Von is signed to Lil Durk’s Only the Family label, an all-Chicago drill recording artists collective. Established by Durk Banks – also a member of the Black Disciples street gang – Only the Family represents family above all else, producing several mixtapes and albums such as Welcome to O’Block; King Von released his posthumous debut What It Means to Be King featuring 21 Savage, G Herbo, Fivio Foreign Moneybagg Yo and Tee Grizzley among many others.

ATL Jacob produced this project, featuring a cinematic visual for “Robberies.” Shot in Chicago, this marks the first release from his estate following his passing.

Durk released his Loyal Bros 2 compilation album last Friday (Dec 16), showcasing the talents of the OTF crew including King Von’s prolific storytelling style, Booka’s melodic flair, Memo’s hard-talking bangers, and JusBlow600’s Chi-town slappers.

4. He is from Chicago

Chicago is well known for its vibrant rap scene and violence. Murder rates remain high while gang members routinely commit and defend crimes committed within its borders. Yet Chicago still retains an undeniable charm that shows up in its music; one such talent was the late rapper King Von, whose unique brag rap style perfectly captured its culture.

Lil Durk quickly recognized his talent, signing him to his Only The Family label. Grandson Vol. 1 was released as his debut mixtape and Welcome to O’Block was his debut studio album the next year.

The album featured Lil Durk, Polo G, and Moneybagg Yo and peaked at 13 on the Billboard 200 chart. Recently, Trap Lore Ross uploaded a documentary entitled King Von: Rap’s First Serial Killer which received considerable backlash on YouTube; due to this action, the documentary has since been removed from YouTube due to backlash received from viewers. Although the King Von autopsy report has not yet been released, it has been widely circulated on social media.
