Yuvan Shankar Raja
Indian music’s youngest composer is Ilaiyaraaja’s son Yuvan Shankar Raja. Yuvan, who was raised a Hindu, chose to switch religions and become a Muslim. He had told TOI that his father was so superstitious that every time a glass was broken, his grandfather would have to summon a pundit. He concluded that the Quran was the source of his peace of mind. After his mother died and he was feeling down, Yuvan experienced his first spiritual awakening. He elaborates as follows: “I began reading the Quran and its translations and connected with it fast. I began studying Islam and praying regularly in December 2013 and was convinced to convert by January 2014. The biggest challenge, he says, was being clean with his father about his choice. When asked about his desire to convert to Islam, Yuvan says his mother was a major influence. He explained his feelings to TOI as follows: “It’s funny, but in some ways I used to receive the spiritual impression that it was my mom, who held my hand, and said, ‘Yuvan, you are alone. Please gather here under the tree we call Islam.
